Your laptop battery life depends on what you are actually doing — not the "up to 12 hours" the manufacturer claims. That spec was tested with the screen at 30% brightness doing nothing but displaying a static webpage. This calculator gives you a realistic estimate based on your actual usage pattern.
Laptop battery runtime estimates for web browsing and gaming on a 56Wh battery.

Laptop Power Draw by Usage Type

ActivityTypical Power DrawRuntime on 56Wh
Idle (screen on, nothing running)5-8W7-11 hours
Web browsing / email10-15W3.5-5.3 hours
Document editing (Word/Sheets)8-12W4.4-6.6 hours
Video streaming (YouTube/Netflix)12-20W2.7-4.4 hours
Video calls (Zoom/Teams)15-25W2.1-3.5 hours
Photo editing (Lightroom)20-35W1.5-2.7 hours
Software development (compiling)25-45W1.2-2.1 hours
Gaming (GPU active)50-100W34-67 minutes
AI/ML training60-120W28-56 minutes

These figures assume a typical ultrabook with a 56Wh battery and integrated graphics. Gaming laptops with larger batteries (80-100Wh) last proportionally longer at each activity level.

Gaming drains a laptop battery over 6× faster than web browsing on the same charge.

How to Find Your Laptop's Battery Specs

  1. Windows: Open a Command Prompt and type powercfg /batteryreport. The generated HTML report shows your battery's design capacity in mWh. Divide by 1,000 to get Wh. It also shows current full charge capacity vs original — a measure of battery health.
  2. Mac: Hold Option and click the Apple menu, then choose System Information. Under Power, find "Full Charge Capacity (mAh)" and voltage. Multiply mAh by voltage and divide by 1,000 for Wh. Or check Apple's spec page for your model's Wh rating.
  3. Check real-time power draw: On Windows, install HWMonitor or check Task Manager's "Power Usage" column. On Mac, Activity Monitor shows energy impact per app. These tools reveal which apps drain your battery fastest.

Worked Examples

Realistic Runtime for Video Calls on a Business Laptop

Context

Your laptop has a 56Wh battery. During video calls (camera on, screen bright, Wi-Fi active), it draws about 20W. The manufacturer claims "up to 10 hours" battery life.

Calculation

Usable: 56 x 0.95 = 53.2 Wh

Runtime: 53.2 / 20 = 2.66 hours

Interpretation

Under 3 hours of video calls — nowhere near the 10-hour claim. That spec was measured with the screen dim and Wi-Fi off. Real-world usage with camera and connectivity cuts it by two-thirds.

Takeaway

For back-to-back meetings, keep the charger plugged in. If you need portable power, a USB-C power bank extends your runway — see our battery capacity calculator to compare power bank specs in Ah and Wh.

How Long Can You Edit Video on Battery?

Context

Your MacBook Pro has a 99.8Wh battery (the FAA maximum). Video editing in DaVinci Resolve with external SSD pushes power draw to 55W.

Calculation

Usable: 99.8 x 0.95 = 94.8 Wh

Runtime: 94.8 / 55 = 1.72 hours

Interpretation

Under 2 hours. GPU-intensive workflows drain even the largest laptop batteries fast. The 99.8Wh battery that lasts 15 hours browsing barely survives a short editing session.

Takeaway

For extended field editing, bring a portable power station. To see how long one lasts, enter its specs into our battery runtime calculator with your editing workload.

Frequently Asked Questions

Glossary

Watt-Hour Capacity

The total energy stored in a laptop battery. A 56Wh battery can deliver 56 watts for one hour, or 14 watts for four hours. Larger capacities mean longer runtime at the same power draw.

Battery Health

A percentage showing how much of the original battery capacity remains after charge cycles. At 80% health, a 56Wh battery effectively holds only 44.8Wh. Most laptops show battery health in system settings or diagnostics.

Power Draw by Activity

The wattage a laptop consumes varies dramatically by task. Idle: 5-8W. Web browsing: 10-15W. Video calls: 18-25W. Gaming or video editing: 45-80W. The activity determines runtime far more than the battery size.

Laptop battery runtime is a moving target that changes with every app you open, every browser tab, and every year of battery aging. The calculation above gives you a baseline — then adjust your habits (screen brightness, background apps, power mode) to get the most out of the capacity you have. Need to convert your laptop's mWh rating to standard Wh or Ah? Our Wh to Ah converter handles the math. If you are building a portable power station from individual cells, the battery pack calculator sizes the configuration.
